The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) licenses Commercial Contractors for the following trades: Electrical, HVAC, Hydronics, Plumbing, and Refrigeration. We do not license Residential Contractors nor do we license General Contractors.

When renewing your license if you do not submit your Certificate of Liability Insurance Form with your Renewal Application, the application will be returned to you.
We will no longer accept Certificate of Liability Insurance Forms from the insurance agencies. They must come directly from the licensee accompanying the Renewal Application.
If you are renewing online and need to submit proof of your insurance, you may fax the Certificate of Liability Insurance to 614-728-1200. However, the insurance form must have your State License Number clearly identified on the form.

Contractor License testing is through PSI. You must be approved by the Board before you are allowed to test. For questions regarding book materials and schedules, please contact PSI at www.psiexams.com or 1-800-733-9267. Reference materials are allowed to be highlighted, underlined, and indexed prior to the examinations,
and will be checked before taking the tests. However, the books cannot be written in.

License Qualification Process
The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) issues State Licenses to Commercial Contractors for the following trades: Electrical, HVAC, Hydronics, Plumbing, and Refrigeration. To receive a state license, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be a United States citizen or a legal alien-must provide proof of being a legal
alien.
- Either have been a tradesperson in the type of licensed trade for which the application
is filed for not less than five (5) years immediately prior to the date the application
is filed, currently be a registered engineer in this state with three (3) years
of business experience in the construction industry in the trade for which the engineer
is applying to take the examination, or have other experience acceptable to the
appropriate section of the board.
- Never have been convicted of a disqualifying offense as defined in S.B. 337.
- Pass the examination in the trade.
- Carry minimum $500,000 contractor liability coverage.
- Pay the applicable fees.
Be advised: 
Once you have been approved by the Board, you are required to complete a State and Federal
Background Check prior to sitting for the examination.

Mail the completed and notarized O.C.I.L.B. Test Application Packet, Homeland Security DMA page, and $25 nonrefundable check or money order made payable to “Treasurer, State of Ohio” to:

The application MUST be Notarized.
Incomplete applications will delay your application process. Please include your email address (if applicable) so we may contact you by email to better serve you in case there are questions regarding your application.
Dates of employment must have start and end Month, Day, and Year. You must have five (5) years working experience in that trade with no breaks in that five year history immediately prior to completing the application.
Be specific in the nature of duties you had for each employer and include information on employers including addresses, phone numbers, and complete company names.
Attach copies of documentation that would support your credentials such as: any local licenses or registrations, permits that have been obtained, union card, pay stubs, W-2’s, signed contracts, invoices, and letters of recommendation or verification of employment on company letterhead.
You must remove and redact ALL Social Security Numbers.
